Artomatic Takes Flight brings a taste of the historic and world-renowned Artomatic arts festival to visitors coming through Reagan National Airport. Just like the festival, this show is not “curated” – instead, artists are selected on a first-come, first-served basis, this time from a pool of artists who have previously participated in an Artomatic. The result is serendipitous, unpredictable, multifaceted.  The show presents a multitude of artistic personalities–both professional and recreational –from Washington DC, a city with a deep love for the arts.

Artomatic started in 1999 in the historic Manhattan Laundry buildings on Florida Avenue.  Douglas Development donated the use of the buildings to a group of artists who invited their friends to exhibit. These friends, in turn, invited their friends — and so on — until every nook in the building was filled with paintings, sculpture, installations and art of every description. The artists coined the name “Art-O-Matic” to acknowledge the spontaneity of the event and its location in the old laundry building. More than 25,000 people visited the first Artomatic during its six-week lifespan.

The festival now runs for 6 weeks at a time, every couple of years or so.  The date is only set once a site is found – usually a commercial building just coming on line or site slated for demolition. Emerging and established artists present their work side by side and have the chance to work with and learn from one another. Artists, organizations and visitors come together and illustrate the energy, vitality and strength of the arts to impact the community. The festival is completely unjuried, and welcomes artists and musicians on a first-come-first-served basis. The last event featured over 1,700 artists and performers and drew over 70,000 visitors.  Artomatic also hosts smaller events throughout the year and has a licensing program to bring the arts to communities outside the Washington DC metro area.

Can you find themes within the pieces shown here? Every visitor will resonate with different elements of the show.  Now imagine this gallery multiplied by 25, in a huge building, with thousands of artists, alongside performance art and music… Welcome to Artomatic.

  • The National Airport Arts Program

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Arts Program seeks to use the arts as a vehicle to welcome visitors to the Washington D.C., region and the country through art that celebrates the stately beauty, dignified spirit, and subtle elegance of the National Capital Region.

The Arts Program consists of three program components–permanent public art, temporary, rotating art, and performance art. The Temporary and Rotating Exhibits Program consists of providing rotating exhibits at three, distinct spaces each at Ronald Reagan Washington National and Washington Dulles International Airports, one of which is The Gallery Walk at Reagan National. It specifically exists to highlight the unique identity and cultural flavor of the Washington, D.C., region.
